Painting is one of the quickest ways to change a room, and the secret is in the preparation.
Gather supplies
You will need paint, a roller, brushes, a tray, masking tape, dust sheets, filler and sandpaper. Choose paint suitable for the room, such as moisture-resistant types for kitchens and bathrooms.
Prepare the room
Move furniture away or cover it. Lay dust sheets, and remove switch plates. Fill holes and cracks, let the filler dry and sand smooth.
Clean the walls
Wipe away dust and grease so paint will stick. Let the walls dry fully.
Tape and cut in
Apply masking tape to edges, and paint along corners and edges with a brush first. This is called cutting in.
Roll the walls
Load the roller evenly and paint in overlapping W shapes, then fill them in. Work in sections and keep a wet edge to avoid marks.
Apply a second coat
Let the first coat dry fully, as the instructions say, then apply a second for an even finish.
Remove tape and clean up
Peel the tape while the paint is slightly tacky. Wash brushes and rollers and dispose of leftover paint responsibly.
