Before setting off on a long trip, give your car a quick check.
Tyres
Check the pressure, including the spare if you have one, against the figures in your handbook. Look for wear, cuts or bulges.
Fluids
Check oil, coolant and screenwash. Top up as needed, following the manual.
Lights
Test headlights, brake lights and indicators. Ask someone to help you check the rear lights.
Brakes and wipers
Notice any unusual noises or a soft pedal. Replace worn wiper blades before bad weather.
Emergency kit
Carry a torch, reflective vest, warning triangle where required, a first-aid kit and a charger. Include water and snacks.
Plan the journey
Check the route and traffic, plan rest breaks and allow extra time. Take a break every couple of hours.
Check your documents
Make sure insurance, breakdown cover and licence details are up to date.
