How to Check a Used Car Before You Buy

A careful look and a test drive can save you from an expensive mistake. Here is a practical checklist.

Used car with the bonnet open during a pre-purchase inspection

Buying a used car can save money, but only if you know what you are buying. A methodical check helps.

Research first

Look up the model’s common problems, typical running costs and insurance group. Find out what a fair price is for similar cars in your area.

Check the paperwork

Ask to see the ownership documents and service history. Make sure the identification number on the car matches the paperwork. In many countries you can run an official or paid history check for outstanding finance, accident records and mileage.

Inspect the outside

View the car in daylight. Look for uneven panel gaps, mismatched paint and rust, particularly around wheel arches and sills. Check the tyres for even wear.

Look inside

Test every switch, window and light. Look for damp smells, worn pedals or a driver’s seat that is more worn than the mileage suggests.

Look under the bonnet

Check for oil leaks and the condition of fluids. A very clean engine on an old car can be a sign that someone has tried to hide something.

Take a proper test drive

Drive on different roads and listen for knocks or grinding. Check that the car brakes in a straight line and that the steering does not pull to one side. Try the gears, clutch and any driver aids.

Get an independent inspection

For a car of any significant value, consider paying a qualified mechanic or an inspection service. The fee is small compared with a hidden fault.

Be ready to walk away

If the seller is evasive or something does not add up, leave. There are plenty of other cars.
